Frequently asked questions

We are here to help. Here are some of the most common questions we get asked...

Who are your resources designed for?

Our resources are designed for families, hair professionals and allied health professionals supporting people who experience haircuts differently. This includes autistic children, ADHDers, children with sensory processing differences, anxiety, developmental differences, or simply those who benefit from a calmer, more predictable experience. Every child is unique, and our goal is to provide practical tools that support a wide range of sensory and communication needs.

Can I use your resources in my salon or clininc?

Our resources are created for both families and professionals. Whether you're a parent, neurodivergent soul, hairdresser, barber, salon owner, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, psychologist or educator, you'll find practical tools to help make haircut experiences more inclusive and less overwhelming.

I have an idea for a resource, can I suggest it?

Yes! We're always listening to families and professionals. We love to listen, learn and collaborate! If there's a resource you'd love to see, we'd love to hear your ideas.

What age is The Calm Cutâ„¢ Toolkit suitable for?

The Calm Cut Toolkit has been designed primarily for children aged 1–7 years, but every child is different. Many of the strategies, visual supports and preparation activities can be adapted for older children who would benefit from a calmer, more predictable haircut experience.

What does a Sensory-Safe haircut look like?

A sensory-safe haircut is tailored to the individual. Every person has different sensory preferences and support needs, so no two appointments are exactly the same.

Depending on the individual, a sensory-safe appointment may include a pre-appointment consultation, visual supports, reduced noise, flexible positioning, sensory tools, extra time, lowered lights, wiggle breaks - even dance breaks! clear communication and a slower, more personalised approach.

Most importantly, it's an appointment where YOU are in control to move at your own pace, in an environment that feels comfortable for your needs.

The goal isn't always to achieve the "perfect haircut" - it's to create an experience where the client feels safe, respected and supported.

Can any salon become a Sensory Safe Salon?

Absolutely. Creating a more inclusive salon doesn't happen overnight, but every small change can make a meaningful difference. We're developing practical resources, education and training to help salons build confidence and create calmer, more welcoming experiences for every client. You've already made a difference, just by being here.

What are your qualifications?

Sensory Safe Salons was founded by Kelly Pariossien, a neurodivergent hairdresser with more than 25 years of industry experience and a passion for making haircuts more accessible for ALL.

Our resources combine professional hairdressing experience, ongoing learning, collaboration with allied health professionals and, most importantly, real-life experience supporting families (including our own) through sensory-safe haircuts.
