Sensory Safe Salons™ began with one very long first haircut - and the realisation that children need more than simply being told to sit still and be brave.
Heartfelt beginnings
As a mum of neurodivergent children, and over 25 years working as a hairdresser, teacher, and salon owner, I've experienced first hand how difficult, even traumatising, haircuts can feel for some children,
In my work at Sien Hair, I’ve supported children who were unable to enter the salon, sit in the chair or tolerate a cape, comb or clippers. Some had experienced previous haircuts where their distress was ignored or they were physically held still.
I believe that success doesn’t always mean completing a haircut. Sometimes it means walking through the door, meeting the hairdresser, touching the tools or leaving with enough trust to return.
Those small steps matter. They are how confidence is built.
